“GET TO IT - LET’S IPO”
ACT I SCENE 8
(MacroShaft headquarters. Gil's office is stage left, Gil's waiting chairs in the hallway are stage right. Spotlight on: Gil, Kay, and JP at the office table.
Spotlight on: Three investment bankers, nattily dressed in top hats and tails, like Mr. Moneybags from the "Monopoly" game, seated in the chairs in the hallway.
Each investment banker carries a mysterious sack. One is very tiny, one is very large, and one is middle-sized, just right. Full stage lights up)
CHARLIZE (Voice offstage)
Gil, Kay, JP - the investment bankers are here. From Golden Sacks.
GIL
Great. We're ready. Send 'em in.
(The three bankers stand up. Each carries a heavy sack, filled with money. They shuffle across the hallway to enter the conference room, struggling under the weight of their riches)
GIL (Continued)
Come on in.
(Shakes hands with the lead banker)
Good to see you again, Jamie! And...your team.
KAY
Yes, welcome. Can we take your things? Your coats? (Looks at their stuff)
Your...bags of money?
JAMIE DIAMOND
Nope, that's okay. We gotta keep these babies with us at all times.
(J.P. is confused. Gil beams; he's seen this before)
KAY
So, before we start, I just have to ask. Are those literally bags of money?
And why do you carry them around?
JAMIE
(With the biggest sack)
You betcha, it's money, honey. Gold coins. Because we're the best investment bank on Wall
Street. And we want everyone to know, by showing it, every day.
(Pause)
We're 100% committed to growing the profits of our own equity partners...I mean..to your growth as a client!
NUMBER TWO
(With the medium sack)
Yeah, just like he said! Here's how it works.
The more senior you are, an equity partner like Jamie, here?
They make more money than Midas each year.
Bonuses are ginormous!
So, they get to carry the biggest sacks!
Me, I'm mid-level, gunning for partner. So...
(Points to his sack)
Not too big, not too small...just right!
KAY
But isn't that really heavy? Carrying around all that gold?
And you, sir, as the senior partner...
How do you carry around..,
That vast... Amount...of...wealth?
JAMIE
Well, it does weigh a ton.
That's why we have the junior I-bankers here...
To carry these big bags around for us!
J.P.
(Turns to junior banker) Dude, that's a hefty load. You okay?
JAMIE
Don't you worry, son. They're not weighed down.
Their own sacks of gold are itty-bitty, teeny-tiny.
After all, they're the juniors!
(Beams)
Okay, Gil, shall we get started?
(Turns to Kay)
And honey, could you be a dear and bring me a cup of coffee?
Two creams and extra sugar, sugar.
KAY
(Eyes flashing)
Now, wait a minute...
GIL
(Eyes flash as well)
Jamie! Remember? I told you that I'm not going to run this meeting?
It's our star manager's show.
JAMIE
(Confused, looks past Kay at J.P.)
Ah, yes, Gil, I remember.
(To J.P.)
But aren't you a little young to be a star manager?
GIL
(Explodes)
That's, J.P., our tech whiz. He'll do the product demo.
No, our star manager is Kay - right here.
(Kay shrugs her shoulders, like the “shrugging” emoji, as she does when encountering yet another ridiculous workplace situation.
Orchestra sound, and brief spotlight.
Then she smacks her forehead)
KAY
Honestly, how many times do I have to...
GIL
Don't worry, Kay.
(Turns to Jamie)
Hey, stop right there, Jamie Diamond. We're not going to stand for this...You insulting our staff.
Especially Kay. She's our star, and she's got a boffo presentation to share.
JAMIE
(Beaming, broadly)
Gil! Gilly-billy-silly, old boy.
No harm, no foul, right?
Everyone was... just kidding.
(He turns to Kay, with exaggerated politeness, and bows)
Please accept my most sincere apologies.
KAY
(Still steaming, under her breath)
If they gave me a nickel for every time...
I'd have one of those big moneybags too...
JAMIE
(Shark-like, sensing an opening)
What was that? Did I hear you say something?
KAY
(Settling herself)
No, I just...
Let's just start the meeting, OK?
JAMIE
(Repeats his mock-chivalric flourish)
As I said...please accept my most sincere apologies!
(Kay rolls her eyes)
JAMIE (Continued)
Well, the least you could do for me is give a lil' curtsy.
(Kay shoots a dagger-like look at Jamie)
GIL
(Explodes)
That's it, Jamie. That's enough.
I have to put up with you at the club, since we're all members. But today you're in my office.
And you'll treat my team with the respect they deserve.
(Pause)
In fact, I was going to say this privately afterwards, Jamie, but I'll say it now.
(Beat)
Golden Sacks has been under-performing for us.
You're happy to add our fees to your moneybags, but when's the last time we saw a "buy" recommendation from your analysts?
(Pause) I think...
(Beat)
Jamie, I think...
Maybe you just step aside today.
And let Number Two over there, handle the meeting.
I hear he's gunning for partner anyway.
(Beat)
Sounds about right, don't you think....old boy?
JAMIE
(Concedes defeat)
Why, certainly.
If that's what it takes for us to leave here with more money, that's what it takes.
But now it's my turn to be candid, Gil...and...
(turns to Kay)
...what's your name?
KAY
It's Kay. Kay Okimoto.
JAMIE
Okay, Kay Okimoto.
Hey, I like the sound of that.
(Cue Kay with the shrug emoji)
JAMIE (Continued)
So, Gil. And...Kay.
We think this IPO is a dog.
What is this new AI product anyway?
What does it do? How does it work?
Nobody knows how any of these AI products work...
None of 'em, not a single one.
So why are company valuations so high?
We don't know.
Where are the rivers of revenue to offset all this capital investment?
We don't know.
We just keep pumping up the hype and people buy it...
Welcome to the AI economy!
But this new product? This...SynerSpeak?
(Puts hands up in a mock dog-with-paws pose)
Woof, woof. Owoooo!
KAY
(Icily)
Perhaps you need a technical explanation.
All of you.
So, put down those moneybags and pay attention.
J.P., care to demo our outstanding new product SynerSpeak™ 1.0?
J.P.
Glad to, Kay.
(Orchestra music of novelty musical instruments chimes in: kazoos, harmonicas, slide whistles.
JP waves his arms around, gesticulates wildly, raps palm-in-fist to make a point, pounds on the table.
A slide whistle sound ends the product demonstration).
JAMIE
I didn't understand a single word of that.
KAY
Of course you didn't.
But I didn't expect you to.
You probably still have a VCR at home, am I right?
(Jamie nods, sheepishly)
KAY (Continued)
And it still blinks 12:00, right?
(Jamie nods again)
NUMBER TWO
But I got it! Wow...SynerSpeak! What a great product!
(Turns to Jamie)
Look, boss, I know you told us to slow-walk the IPO, but after hearing this?
KAY
(Flashes) Slow-walk?
You guys from Golden Sacks are exceeding your dismal reputation.
You sound like this is the winter of your discontent.
Can't you see clearly now, the rain has gone? I can see all obstacles in my way.
With this new AI product, it's nothing but springtime and sunny skies ahead!
(Orchestra begins to play, "GET TO IT (LET'S IPO)"
KAY
WHEN THE LITTLE RED ROBIN
WHO SEES THE FLOWERS ALL A'BLOSSOM
STARTS TO SING, "SPRING SPRING"
WHEN THE OPENING BELL

(With the final notes of the song, the bankers have fallen head over heels for Kay).
NUMBER TWO
Wow. Just wow.
JAMIE
OK, so I was wrong.
I'm man enough to admit it.
This SynerSpeak™ 1.0 looks like the next big thing. (Turns to his team)
You heard the lady.
Let's get to it. Let's IPO! (Orchestra brass button. Lights down).
END OF ACT I, SCENE 8.

“IT’S DE-BUBBLY”
ACT I SCENE 9
(MacroShaft headquarters, two days later. Gil and Kay are meeting at the table in Gil's office. Phone rings and Gil answers)
GIL:
Hello, it's Gil.
(Squawk squawk) Yes, Jamie. What can I do you for?
(Squawk squawk squawk) Yes, I know you're sorry.
(Squawk squawk)
No, I won't apologize to her for you.
Why don't you apologize to her directly?
She's right here.
I can put her on speaker.
(Squawk squawk squawk)
What's that?
You'd prefer not to? Why not?
(Squawk squawk squawk).
Oh I see.
So, you're...
Intimidated by her, now? Is that it?
Well, I can see why.
(Turns to Kay and winks)
Sometimes I'm a little intimidated by her myself...
(Squawk squawk squawk)
What's that? Good news?
Preliminary sales on the IPO round are looking strong? What's that you said?
Oversubscribed?
Well, that's great to hear Jamie.
And I'm sure your team and their moneybags are pleased as well.
OK, OK Jamie.
I'll tell her your congratulations. Yes I will.
(Squawk squawk)
And...golf on Saturday morning, as usual? See you at the club!
(Puts down phone)
KAY
Let me guess.
That was Jamie Diamond from Golden Sacks.
And he's...A little bit sorry for being such a...
How do you say it...
What's the right word, the one Charlize uses...
A prick?
GIL
He can't help himself.
He was that way even back during freshman year at Princeton...
Some people never grow up.
(Pulls a paper file out from his deck. It is marked: K.O. PERFORMANCE REVIEW).
GIL (Continued)
But you, Kay Okimoto. Look at you!
What did we say for your performance goals this year?
(Looks at Kay's file)
KAY
Oh, it's nothing Gil. The team really rose to the occasion.
GIL
Ah, yes, the team. And on a high-profile project, at that.
Well, I gotta hand it to you Kay.
The IPO is going exceedingly well, according to Jamie.
And the board is off my back now too!
Even Fred, the Board Chair.
Now when he calls Charlize, he's back to asking her for French restaurant recommendations.
KAY
(Straightens)
Gil, but seriously. I want to thank you.
For standing up for me.
In the Golden Sacks meeting.
GIL
(Flushed, a little embarrassed)
Just doing my part...To get you the respect you deserve.
You and me, we're...
KAY
...a team. I know.
And we've always come through, together.
Remember our first big new product launch, back in 1995? For the new operating system?
MicroShaft Panes 95? Then it was Panes 98, then Panes 2000, then Panes XP…
GIL
Those were the days.
Launching this company, and the entire tech industry, at the same time...
It was not child's play, no sirree, it was no game...Sometimes it could be a royal Pane!
(Gil LOL, delighted at the Dad-joke pun)
KAY
It certainly wasn't a game. At least, not a game of Monopoly...I hope?
GIL
(Mock alarm)
Shhh, Kay. The Department of Justice might still be listening!
(They share a laugh, together)
GIL (Continued)
Anyway, maybe more like the Game of Life?
KAY
I love it! Spinning the wheel, pushing those little plastic cars around the board.
What was the point of that game, do you remember? How did you win?
GIL
Well, Kay, I hate to be so blunt, but I think you won by finishing with the most money!
KAY
(Teasing)
That's not what I remember, Gil.
I think you won by having the most happiness points!
GIL
Doesn't matter.
In our real Game of Life, MacroShaft is about to make another bundle of money.
I can't wait to tell the fellas at the club.
(Orchestra starts playing "IT'S DE-BUBBLY." Gil starts speaking, as if practicing his pitch to the "fellas at the club" and Kay joins him.
Kay and Gil then sing together, finishing each other's lines in the duet).
GIL
(chuckles)
I feel the sudden urge to pitch--
KAY
(speaking)
A new investment that will make you rich.
GIL (starts singing)
SO PLEASE CEASE YOUR IMPULSE TO FLEE
WHILE I FINE TUNE THE MELODY
THIS PITCH I'VE STARTED, IF WELL DONE
THE INVESTMENT THESIS COULD SPARK A RUN
KAY
TO CRACK OPEN THE FIRE HOSE
JUST SKIP THE PROSPECTUS, GO RIGHT TO THE CLOSE...
GIL
HERE WE GO-!
GIL AND KAY
THE MARKET'S YOUNG, THE CONCEPT'S CLEAR
SO, IF YOU WANT TO INVEST, MY DEAR-
IT'S DE-SHINY, IT'S DE-SPARKLY, IT'S DE-BUBBLY
I UNDERSTAND YOUR RATIONALE
WHY YOU BUY INTO THIS MIRACLE --
IT'S DE-SHINY, IT'S DE-SPARKLY, IT'S DE-BUBBLY!
YOU CAN TELL AT A GLANCE
THE PROSPECTUS IS A VERY RARE CHANCE
YOU CAN HEAR THE EQUITY ANALYSTS CRY:
"BUY LOW, SELL HIGH."
SO PLEASE BE SWEET, MY UNICORN
AND WHEN YOU BUY, YOU CAN TELL THE SWARM:
"IT'S DE-SHINY, IT'S DE-SPARKLY
IT'S DE-PREMIUM, IT'S DE-VISION, IT'S DE-ENERGY,
IT'S DE-BUBBLY!
(J.P. enters the room, whispers to Kay. She looks alarmed, and whispers back.
J.P. nods, insistently.
Gil acknowledges J.P. has arrived with an affectionate "double guns" finger salute.
J.P. winces slightly)
GIL AND KAY
YOU CAN TELL AT A GLANCE
THIS FRENZY IS YOUR LAST GOLDEN CHANCE
YOU CAN HEAR MARKET MAKERS PRACTICALLY CRY:
"BUY MORE. SELL HIGH."
SO PLEASE PRICE UP MY UNICORN
AND WHEN YOU BUY, YOU CAN TELL THE SWARM:
"IT'S DE-UPSIDE, IT'S DE-LIMITLESS"
"IT'S DE-PLATINUM, IT'S DEMULTIPLE"
"IT'S DE-ROCKET SHIP, IT'S DE=MOON SHOT"
"IT'S DE=LUSION"
"IT'S DE-BUBBLY!"
KAY
BUT...BUT, GIL
J.P.
WHAT IF MORE IS LESS...
KAY and JP, together
...NOT MORE?
(Bright white spotlight on Gil. Suddenly, he is a deer in the headlights.
* * * (Orchestra button. Curtain down).
END OF ACT I, SCENE 9.
(Blackout).
* * *
